What is a CNC Tool Presetter?

John Saunders, a machine owner known for running the popular CNC machining YouTube channel, stopped by BIG KAISER to discuss presetters with our assistant product manager Patrick Cratty. Saunders shared with his audience a video featuring the Speroni MAGIS presetter, a revolutionary measuring system with a clean and trouble-free, single-screen user interface.

With the Speroni MAGIS tool presetter, there’s an opportunity for reduced runout, longer tool life and less spindle downtime. The main benefit of having a presetter is the ability to measure tools offline while the machine center is making chips. This way, any potential problems can be caught quickly, increasing overall production.

“I’m starting to become a lot more conscious of tool life. I want to invest in better holders,” says Saunders. “A presetter may not solve it (runout), but it’s at least going to let you check.”

The Speroni MAGIS’s automatic runout feature measures and graphs the tool runout as the tool is in the presetter—as demonstrated in the video with tools such as a drill and boring head.
