Penske Racing Hosts 3rd Machining Technology Summit
TEAM PENSKE welcomed visitors to its race shop and headquarters in Mooresville, NC, for the third annual Machining Technology Summit last month. About 60 manufacturing professionals signed up to learn about new technology for metal cutting and get behind the scenes at this fast-paced motorsports manufacturing facility.
The tour included an exciting pit stop demonstration, as well as machining demonstrations showing how the team applies technology to build approximately 100 stock cars each race season. Austin Cindric, driver of the No. 22 Ford Mustang in the NASCAR XFINITY Series joined the summit guests for lunch, fan photos and autographs.
“The content provided by the machine shop manager provided technical depth and insight … We see ways where this type of event would be very useful to the younger team members in our shop in terms of skills and knowledge development,” said Gillen Young, owner of Custom Tool.
Technical partners including BIG KAISER and MAZAK support TEAM PENSKE in the NASCAR Series by providing machines, tooling and expertise to increase productivity and machining precision while reducing time and material waste.
“Over time the complexity of our parts has increased so we have to pursue faster turn times and higher precision. We reach out to our partners to help us really take advantage of everything our machines and tools can deliver,” said James O’Toole, machine shop manager at TEAM PENSKE. “We are all about winning, and what we make in the shop directly affects winning at the track.”
“The information provided at the morning seminar was just the right amount to continue further discussion at our shop about method, type of products and how they are used efficiently in a world-class environment. This trip was definitely worth the time,” said Tim Wetzel, president of Homeyer Precision Manufacturing.
